"Uncle" Says Eto'o Is Nigerian
By Ephraim Nwosu,SoccerStar Magazine
A Nigerian sports magazine, SoccerStar has claimed that prolific striker, Samuel Eto'o Fils is a national of the neighbouring Federal Republic of Nigeria. In its Thursday, February 16, edition, the magazine quotes someone whom it identifies as an uncle of Eto'o's as saying that the soccer wizard who clinched the African Best Player Award for the third time running last week, hails from Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
We publish the SoccerStar article in ex stenso:"SoccerStar can now authoritatively confirm the report of its weekend publication, which revealed that Cameroon dreaded striker, Samuel Eto'o Fils is truly a Nigerian.
"The player's uncle, Chris Mbe, confirmed this much. The Lagos-based accountant disclosed that the Barcelona star actually hails from Amasiri, Amuro in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
"My name is Chris Mbe," he began."I am a native of Ebonyi State of Nigeria. I come from the same village as well as the same compound with the world renowned soccer star Samuel Eto'o Fils," he revealed.
Continuing, he stated: "I saw the story in your paper last weekend where it was boldly written that Samuel Eto'o is a Nigerian, parents from Amuro Amasiri, Ebonyi State among others. "I want to seize this opportunity to confirm the story to be actually very true precisely as you reported because Samuel Eto'o is our son. Many people don't know this.
"Even before now, I used to tell a lot of people that Eto'o is my brother. In fact, 99 per cent of the people I told always doubt me. They say because he is a star that is why I now want to claim him. Now, I'm vindicated and that is why I am delighted to give you further information.
"His father, John Okwa and my own father are from the same grand parents. "In Igboland, we call it umunna. We come from one and the same grandfather. In other words, his father and my own father are brothers," he stressed.
Mbe explained that but for the death of Eto'o's eldest brother in Amauro the world would have since known that the two-time African Footballer of the Year was of a Nigerian parentage."When I confonted Eto'o's mum to make him realise the need to know ourselves as brothers, she stressed that her first son died under mysterious circumstances and as such they are scared. That is why they made up their minds not to come to Amasiri again," he said.
"Another notable thing during our last discussion which escaped my mind was the issue of not erecting a befitting home in Amasiri. She does not want to hang around peoples' houses. I advised her that it's the more reason Eto'o must come and build a house in the village because my uncle has stayed in Cameroon for more than 50 years," he further narrated.

Well, this sound interesting. Whatever his nationality, he is a black african and a West african for that matter. But there is no smoke without fire.
There is even an individual holding a top post in Cameroon who is denying his Nigerian ancestry. I don't see why he should deny. Cameroon is not Ivory Coast and will never be.
Even if Eto'o's father was Nigerian, he was born in Cameroon and he is Cameroonian. Those or the man who began writing petition for the independence of Southern Cameroon, Sammy Juan was a from the Caribbean.
Currently, there are a number of people with Sierre leonian ,Liberian and Caribbean ancestries in Cameroon and have diluted into the mainstream without any problem.

Yeah,
Nothing wrong if he is a Nigerian. We also have top ranking Government officials who are not Cameroonians. We used Etame Mayer at one time who is not a Cameroonian.Eto could have a doubtfull parenthood, because we know only of her mother from time immemorial but for the father is a call for concern

Southern Cameroons was a free and democratic country that absorbed people of Nigerian, Camerounese, West Indian, Togolese origins with ease, without judging them by their national origins. Southern Cameroons would absorb even ungrateful nincompoop like Riccardo with ease, because it is at its core a free country. This kind of tribe and nation baiting is typical and nauseating. Enough with the french kind of divide and rule game.

Gentlemen,
Take a critical look at Eto'o. I think his face resembles a nigerian face. Look at it well.
Eto'o could be. No one knows. To be frank with you if something like that happens to me I'll have to look at it critically and make judgements. Nevertheless, insasmuch as he was born in Cameroon, then he's a Cameroonian. He's a Cameroonian with Nigerian heritage. None of us know that second we cried out from our mother's womb.
If you're sweeping your home and find a note dropped under the table. Openning it you find that your alledged parents are not your real parents and it goes to explain why. What will you do?

Eto`o Fils at the tender age of 24 is a god.He takes aim at the round ball as if he were possessed. When you see him play,it is nothing ,but an artist at work. With him breathing down Ronaldhino`s heels ,need we say the African continent can`t contain him!
So why should his dear uncle even dream of carving out any space for him.Anyway even Sani Abacha would have loved to be Eto`o`s kinsman.
Eto`o`s uncle reminds us that his brother ( Eto`o`s father) has been sojourning in Cameroon for over 5o years. So what the hell is he happing about. The 50 years spent in Cameroon have seen the birth of a genuis. This birth should not be likened to that of children whose pregnant mothers are faried to foreign lands by unscrupulous husbands in order to acquire citizenship after birth. No Eto`o`s father came to Cameroon just as John Fitzgerald Kennedy`s grandparents arrived America from Ireland.Young Fitzgerald set a tall order for him self, and later climbed to the top of the world. So did little Samuel.Everyday that has passed has seen him grow in the real sense of the word.
We will like therefore to tell Eto`o`s uncle that ,Martins who plays with Inter Milan is from Bakassi,Drogba is from Cote d`Ivoire, but Eto`o Fils is not from Bakassi,he`s not From Douala,Cameroon,
Africa.Eto`o Fils is at the top of the world, and that is where his nationality comes from!

maybe u are right, but what the hell does it mean. there is nothing to argue about it.
It all depends on Eto'o acknowledging it, and even if he does, where does that leave us?
Maybe he may start playing for Nigeria next year.

I just hope this uncle would have stood by Eto'o if he wasn't successful in his carreer. Anyway there is never smoke without fire.Eto'o can be your brother but he is a skriker in Cameroon.
The same was once said of Roger Milla.Such stories will always come up.

NATIONALITY OR ORIGIN?
3 question to Etos, so-called uncle.
1) How come your name is Chris Mbe? And Samuel is answering Samuel Eto?
2) Why are you not called Chris Eto or why is Eto not called Samuel Mbe?
3) Mr Chris, don,t you know even you Surname (Mbe) sounds Cameroonian?
If Eto was born to a Cameroonian mother and a foreign father (in or out of Cameroon), then Eto authomatically and naturally is a Cameroonian to all effects. He can claim the nationalities of both parents without any guidicial proceeding(s) if he finds it necessary.
Normally, if a person is born in a given country, he/she is in most cases considered a national of that country, even if his/her parents are foreigners.
In some cases, like in Italy, you are not authomatically an Italian, even if you are/were born in Italy. You can only ask for the Italian nationality after 18 years.
I do not exactly know how it functions in Cameroon with children whose parents are foreigners.
In Eto,s case, and from the story by the so-called uncle, i strongly believe that Eto is a Cameroonian(naturally and legally).
Naturally because his mother is Cameroonian. Legally because he was norn in Cameroon and in addition to that he posseses a Cameroonian passport.
It could be true that his father is actually Nigerian. But this does not mean that Samuel Eto is not also a Cameroonian. His father can be Nigerian and Eto can be a Cameroonian.
Children born in America by Cameroonian parents are not Cameroonians. Their parents are Cameroonians but they are Americans.
What the "uncle" was supposed to say is that Samuel Eto,s father is a Nigerian. That sounds more intelligent.
But to say that Samuel Eto, who was born in Cameroon to a Cameroonian mother, and who legally and naturally owns a Cameroonian passport is a Nigerian is incorrect.
Like i said, his father could truely and naturally be Nigerian, but that does not mean he is Nigerian or a non-Cameroonian.
There are a good number foreigners (in Cameroon)with no Cameroonian origin, but with Cameroonian citizenship. There is nothing bad in that if only those foreigners acquired this citizenship legally.
If a Nigerian is born in Cameroon to Nigerian parents and legally applies for a Cameroonian citizenship, and he obtains thereafter a Cameronian Nationality, then there is nothing absolutely wrong in that.
To conclude, Eto is a Cameroonian but may have a Nigerian origin.
And so, what? Does that make him unfit to play for Cameroon or that will make him to play for Nigeria as a Nigerian?
I don,t think his origin has anything to do with us.

Where was his uncle when Eto'o was struggling on his own to become what he is. Africans, they never miss an opportunity to identify with the right people. If Eto'o was in rags, u would say u don't know him.

Hello Mr Ako,
Be very careul with your use of words. Can you tell me how you can differentiate a Nigerian from a Cameroonian just by mere looking at his/her face.
What you have said are what plunged Rwanda and Burundi into what we all know. Genocide. And before Rwanda, one man who used such characterisation as you might have inocently done was Adolf Hiter. And you well know the consequences.
Can you tell from a name somebody's ethnic back ground? Perhaps in the past but no longer valid these days with intermarriages.
Please remember that, africa's present mapping or borders are the creation of Europeans that you mentioned in one of your reaction to a post here on, that, they are in Cameroon because of their own interest.
Which is not wrong. However concerning Eto'o, you just have to leave him alone. In Cameroon, any person born there has automatic citizenship ,hence all the noise we are making is of no value.
In Nigeria ,there are many citizens holding top functions in the civil and military whose ancestry can be traced to Cameroon.
Yobo who plays for the Nigerian national team and Vincent Enyama are also by ancestry of Cameroonian stock, but it does not raise too much question.
Adem Bassy William a former goal keepper with the Lions was of Nigerian ancestry.
Cameroon has also at a point, lay claim over Obafemi Martins who is plying his trade with Inter Milan. Know that wehenever some one is at the bud, every one wants to lay claim.
In Tunisia like most northern African countries known for their racism, they have been claiming that, Cacuis Clay is a Tunisian even though he is black.
Why? Because he is an all time best world boxer. Jerry John Rawlings father came out of the wood only when his son became president.
This simply means that, those vociferating and questioning why Mr Mbe the supposed uncle of Eto'o only came out now to claim or recognise his nephew are perhap not living on Earth.
As for those question the the difference in the names of the uncle and Eto'o, I also think that, they are not west africans or are pretending. There are people who have quite different names from their father or families.
Secondly, the name Mbe if I were to react like some of you, I will say it is an ethnic Bassa name from either the Nkam, Sanaga Maritime or Nyone and Kelle division or from the North west or South west provinces.
But no! I am not that way, for I know that in River State and now Eboyi state, you have people called Tonye ,Mbe and Mellone. How did it happen? This is not the place to explain.
Since you ended your piece with a question, I want to return the favour to you.
Did you know that in Cross River State of Nigeria there are people who bear your name AKO, and common names in Cameroon such as Obi, Enow, Eko and OROCK? Did you know that in Akwaya sub division just to name this, the tribes there over lap or are across both Benue state and Akwaya subdivision right up to Momo division in the North west or both countries. That is Cameroon and Nigeria?
Who are they? Cameroonians or Nigerian? They are Nigerian if they are on the Nigerian side and Cameroonians if they are on Cameroonian territory.
As for the fellow called Papi who is claiming that Rexon might be Nigerian, he/she should remember that, Nigeria is far more better than Cameroon and I don't think Rexon will be angered y such tantrums.

Rene,Bon and Felix,
Are you taking this forum as a stage to stage your jokes or a launching pad to propagate your tribalistic and xenophobic conducts?
The promoters of this forum have done a good job in making it easier to get proofs that, some members of the ruling partyt that some of you claim to belong or share their vision for Cameroon, were instructed by Hutu extremists of the former Rwandan regime.
When time comes, you will all be good material for prosecution. You may use all sorts of aliases ,but you shall be uncovered in broad day light.
You are not just a shame to Cameroon that you seem to think you are defending but a disgrace to blacks and West Africans.
Perhaps you may be joking, but it is an expensive one. Now one can truely understand why your grand old Cameroon instead of progressing is regressing.
Fortunately all Cameroonians are not of your stock. There are people who did spill their blood for Cameroon that you use your leisure and pleasure to drag it image in mud.
Please if you want to trade insults go elsewhere. Not here pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Hello Smith Elie,
Thank you so much for your reaction. I was glad when you quoted my other previous contributions from other articles. You're quite statistical. That's good. Keep up!
I'm afraid I couldn't go through all your piece inbetween the lines as it was terribly long. Try to get them short. However, I learnt that you were trying to ask questions and realised that you tried playing the role of a teacher. Although your points're good, permit me say they're superfluous cos I'm versed with all those. Please when next you write to me, assume that I know already cos we think. Can't you identify a Chinese? Hahahahahahaha. I'm just being logical. Anyway, a Chinese can still change their nationality. I wish to strongly argue that one may guess and trace someone's nationailty from their looks. I spoke on a "maybe" case and not with all certainty.
I didn't make mention of names when I wrote.
Nevertheless, what I intended to put through's that Eto'o may be a Nigerian from the judgements of the origin of his forefathers and not a Nigerian by virtue of his birth place. Anybody can claim any nationality - play a US diveristy visa lottery and when you win, you're an American. Go to school in Britain and work for years and apply for citizenship. Win a gold medal at an Olympics and get many counrties running after you. I guess you'll understand my stance this time around.
Just keep thinking.

There are many Cameroonians who have by birth or otherwise acquired Nigerian nationality.
It is not the first time that a Nigerian has played for the National team.
Remember Geofrey Ihuba Ikoko aka JEAN PLAQUE of Molyko Buea? He played for the Indomitable Lions though born of Nigerian Parents in Buea. Not strange at all. Laurent Etame Mayer is offcourse of Fernando Po origins. No qualms.
Eto'o's dad can be truely from Nigeria. What is wrong here is that there are many such unfortunate other children in Cameroon today, born of Nigerian parents who are still being harassed as Biafras. I have a friend who sells at the Marche Centrale ( Marche Lagos) in Douala needing to pay for residence permit every year eventhough he was born in Cameroon and cannot even speak Igbo. Eto'o can be truely the son of a Nigerian Man but he is a Cameroonian. Period.
I am proud to be a successful Nigerian living and enjoying my live in Cameroon. Though my kids are born here I have no reason to seek Cameroon Nationality for them.

Chief Dr Mrs Azobuike C N, you have no right to complain of Residence permit not to talk about your friend case.
I have families extension in uroba- Shagamu and I can claim Nigerian Nationality at anytime. It just depends on my political carrier and of course if the Nigerians will not play Ivory coast.
I have a dream to assist in making laws and rules in Africa most populus State. In Political history size counts.
Posted by: felix | Tuesday, 21 February 2006 at 07:50 AM
Dear Madam, Azobuike,
I am glad you took part in this forum. The case you brought up should never have happened.
Because the laws of Cameroon are very clear, any child born in Cameroon from alien parents is Cameroonian and have the rights of nationals as stipulated in the law.
What I can assure you is that, as Democracy takes roots in Cameroon such cases shall not only be addressed but solved.
Cameroon is glad to have people from all other parts of Africa and Nigerians are great contributors to the economic growth of our country.
Officially, Nigeria is the second trading partner of Cameroon after France. However, we are both aware that, in reality Nigeria is the our first trading partner.
Travelling is learning and my time spent abroad has made me to see first hand how Cameroonians are tormented. But as always, there are men and women of Good will who always come to their rescue.
I want Cameroonians not to be xenophobic but open to foreigners.

Why not share. I think one thing we all lack is the virture of sharing. We got a very big pie we can't eat on our own. As someone rightly stated above, he is too much for us. I hear he is a personal friend to the president of Barca. Once i was walking the streets of brussels, i came across two lil white children who were just returning from sports. They were kicking a football on their way and i asked them to pls give a pass to me. They did almost immediately and after juggling with the ball for about 2 minutes one asked if i was from Cameroon? I inhesitantly said yes. He then opened his overcoat and showed me the jersy of Samuel Eto'o and he was quite happy. He said he was going to tell his mother he met someone from Cameroon. Just think of the millions who are happy to be associated with Eto'o and you will understand why his so-called uncle was busy delignating an imaginary ginealogy tree. Let us share and reserve our minds to think of solutions to our every-day problems. Let us be one.

Eto'o's so called uncle according to him, would have as well listed all his arm robbers nephews in Cameroon. When a child is bad it belongs to the mother but, when he is good it belongs to the father oh!Africans when will you stop this nonesense.
Is this the only way you can put the young man under stress not to put on his best.If you so called uncle loves your nephew why not allow him speak and speak when it is comfortable for him.May be you go directly and beg him money for he has been given even to non Africans why not you a Nigerian Mr Long neck Uncle.NO BRING WITCH (sorcière) FOR THAT BOY.Allow him to play his part in this small world , we don't care about his nationality for he is not a politician and blackmailing has little or nothing to do to his career.

Chief Dr Mrs Azobuike C N,
Thanks very much for your very interesting article and for your show of love for your country Cameroon.
Historically, the current southern Cameroonian territory was being governed by the government of Nigeria through its governor in calabar. During that time, most Cameroonians who went to Nigeria were not considering themselves as being in a foreign territory, likewise Nigerians who crossed over to the territory of southern Cameroon’s. I am not a historian but I think there was no immigration rule that differentiates residency status for southern Cameroonians and people from Nigerian heritage in either southern Cameroon’s or Nigeria. My uncles for example, lived in Lagos, panya in Jos, Maiduguri, and other parts of Nigerian for a very long time and some have not relocated to the country even today. I can remember that one of my friends grand father has been a Nigerian police officer working in the southern Cameroon’s (though he was of bakossi origin). In this regards, I want to believe that there were people in the southern Cameroon’s whom after independence had Nigerian ancestry.
I think the current problems with Nigerians in Cameroon is a calculated attempt by the colonial regime of President Paul biya (through its Paris leadership) to eliminate southern Cameroonians from the system. That is why all English speaking people in Cameroon are being described as Nigerians or biafrans. It is part of the divide and rule tactics that looks like the bamenda and cam-no-go technology. Those things that happen to Cameroonians of Nigerian heritage and even southern Cameroonians like myself does not happen to Chadians, Central Africans, Senegalese and other nationals who are also living in the country in hundreds of thousands.
I was born in Buea but raised around tiko sub division where there are many people of Nigerian heritage. Deep down inside me and most members of my family, I feel like parts of my family is lost, because children born of Nigerian descent have been chased back to Nigeria, or do not feel like Cameroonians when abroad with us
Nigerians born in Cameroon are Cameroonians (100 percent) and we need to acknowledge that. they are our brothers, our childhood friends and our family. Some of us feel empty when we have to loose many friends simply because of our very corrupt immigration officers. The residence permit needs to be abolished to children born of Nigerian parents. They are part of us and our immigration officers should love and respect them. I have lost many friends because of this very corrupt immigration rules and I always feel empty, living without knowing their whereabouts. Something needs to be done, I think our current SCNC leadership is thinking of what to do when our colonial government surrenders.

Dear folks,
Most (If not all) African Americans originally came from Africa at the time we did not have the present colonial boundaries. Today, they call themselves Americans and not Cameroonians, Chadians etc. Let Mr. Mbe keep his mouth pointing at the figures in his accounting ledgers in Nigeria and forget about our golden boy - Dr. Eto'o. If Eto was born in Cameroon, then he is clearly a Cameroonian. And if his Parents are from Nigeria and have not naturalised as Cameroonians, therefore Eto has a dual Nationality. The uncle should have introduce himself in 2004 as well when Eto won the price. Why didn't he do so from that period? Why now? What ever the story he is still a Cameroonian by birth.
