The Buea Electoral District of the Social Democratic front, SDF, party has promised to "fight fire for fire" in the 2007 Parliamentary and Council elections if there are any attempts again at rigging.
The vow was taken during a District Exco Conference that held at the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, PCC, hall in Campaign Street, Great Soppo, Buea, November 18.
Repeating after the Electoral District Chairman, Barrister Eta Besong Junior, the over 100 members and militants chorused: "We shall not allow any elections to be rigged here in Buea again.
We shall meet fire with fire," after which there was a sustained applause.Referring to the SDF as a cat and the ruling Cameroon People's Democratic Movement, CPDM, as a rat, Eta Besong alluded to the tenure of the ruling party in the Buea Council since the 2002 municipal elections as: "… the cat had simply left the house and the rat has come in and destroyed everything constructed by the cat.
We must take back our house, manage and keep it [from the 2007 elections]." He said the same would obtain for the parliamentary seat for Buea.John Mokake Endeley, former Mayor of Buea Rural Council, when it was run by the SDF, saluted the fact that several women were heading wards as chairpersons.
He said the women were taking their place according to the Social Democratic principles.
He told the youths to be active in party activities "…because you are the hands and feet of the party."
Mokake said the youths must join in the struggle for democracy and a sane Cameroon, which would mean that their future is secured. The Conference ended with the exco fielding questions on some burning issues by the militants and sympathisers.
During the question and answer session, many militants asked why the government was in a haste to organise elections. They said what the people of Cameroon are in haste to have is an independent electoral commission.
SDF Shadow Cabinet Minister of Justice Professor Ndiva Kofele Kale, from the Buea constituency, who had been on a foreign mission and was just returning to the country, hailed militants for their steadfastness to party principles.
He said they should stay loyal to the party and its hierarchy under Chairman Fru John Ndi.Kale reiterated the vow, adding that the SDF must ensure that elections are not rigged again, "…with or without the independent electoral commission."
