The way these politicians speak is somewhat embarassing. It appears they dont have any agenda other than to continue colouring Mr Biya's democracy.

Feli

My friend Rexon,
I thought we stopped this attitude of rampant proclamations and misdirected criticisms?
The following statement is hollow "..It appears they dont have any agenda other than to continue colouring Mr Biya's democracy."

From all indications, the SDF team in Douala I has been extremely hardworking. They have composed a team with a balanced mix of old and experience, with youthful and energetic; with a fair share to women. They have also organised seminars and conferences to ensure proper outreach to their electorate.
They have modernised their campaign by running a website in French and english where everyone can query their activities and their vision for Douala.
http://www.doualawinningteam.com/
After visting the site and reading their objectives and intentions for their electorate, you can come back and involve yourself in constructive criticisms, which all of us would welcome.

rexon

Feli,

Thanks for the site. I have forwarded it to your friends of the SDF here in Scotland.

What do you mean by misdirect criticisms? Dont you see how your people and Ekindi, Ndam Njoya are constantly flip-flopping with their soo called alliances. At the end of the day, it is the common man that suffers. Lies telling and politiking with Biya is not leading us to anywhere. Yesterday, we heard how another politician of the CPDM was praying for free and fair elections, as if we dont have brains. SDF executives, parliamentarians, mayors, etc can at least feed their families from Biya's payroll, but the common suffers and the system still remains thesame. Rampant corruption, theft of public resources, government delegates manoevering the place, etc. At the end, the soo called oppositions role has been reduced to colouring Mr Biya's democracy.

Cheers and hope something good comes from your party.

rexon

Feli,

Can you please ask Osih and other businessmen in La Republique to tell us how they are surviving in this type of business climate as describe by Becky Enonchong.

Greetings to my Manyu brothers and sisters,

I am writing to you from Douala where I have spent the greater part of the last three years.

As you all prepare the MECA and NOMA conventions, I wanted to provide a little insight on what life is like here. As often as I can, I read the mail from the various net groups. I think that sometimes, some of you lose perspective of what MECA or NOMA are all about. All of the bickering, insults on futile things distract us from what ought to be our common goal: the advancement of Manyu. There is very little on projects and a whole lot on personality conflicts. I would have hoped that by now, with all the experience we have with each other, we would understand that defending ourselves from personal attacks, no matter how vicious and unfair, continues to perpetuate the infighting. We will never advance as long as the infighting continues. We need to learn to turn the other cheek and keep the focus on what is important: better lives for the people of Manyu.

Unfortunately, Manyu problems cannot be solved without taking the whole context of Cameroon into consideration. So what is it really like here? In short, it is nothing like what any of you left behind. Cameroon and Cameroonians, have changed; and mostly, for the worse.

Cameroon is extremely expensive. Douala is the most expensive city in Africa and for what? Our offices are on the main boulevard of the business district and for the last two months, we tread in mud from construction started and abandoned. Our office has no more running water in the day time because SNEC cannot provide sufficient power but our water bills have increased from when we had running water. Our electric bills hover between 500k and 650k a month ($1,000 to $1300), and we have power outages that sometimes last 2 days. Instead of investing in staff, therefore reducing unemployment and poverty, we are forced to spend $10,000 on a backup generator and buy fuel to continue working. We have lost thousands of dollars on equipment that gets destroyed by power surges. A surge protector here lasts just a few months before it has to be replaced. One power surge caused a serious electrical fire, that had we not had fire extinguishers, could have destroyed the entire building.

A decent internet connection (256k to 512k) costs about $2,000 a month or more. Imagine how many more people we could hire with that? The rent for a two bedroom apartment in downtown Douala is between 500k and 850k a month ($1,000 t $1700 a month). This is before electricity, water, etc. And the apartment comes completely bare: no cabinets, no fridge or stove, no air conditioners, nothing. Then you must pay a deposit of 3 months and 6 months to a year’s rent in advance. Fuel here costs almost 600F a liter. That converts to about $3 a gallon.

So how do people manage? They steal. Plain and simple. Call it corruption, call it “commissions,” call it whatever you like, it is organized kleptocracy that does not tolerate anyone not adhering to that method. Not just in government but in the private sector. Remember your best friend in high school? He is now the IT director of a multi-national. You send a proposal and you know you have the best price for the best solution. Well, plan on increasing your invoice by 10-50% for his “commission.” They call it “surfacturation” or overbilling. It is normal business practice. If you don’t comply, be prepared to stay without a contract.

Let’s say you even get a contract. Trying to get paid is an exercise in futility. Now you understand why landlords want payment in advance and why banks don’t lend money. If a company or individual does not want to pay, there is little or nothing you can do to collect. If you are courageous, you can take them to court and subject yourself to a judicial system that thinks the law is something that is only on paper. There is total impunity. A judge can completely disregard the law and there is no consequence. In fact, he will probably get promoted. If your case is crystal clear, includes no subjectivity, and is being monitored by the US Embassy or other “powers” you might even get a judgment in your favor. But try to enforce it. A judgment is as good as a piece of toilet tissue with the main difference that it costs you years of procedures and legal fees. Let us not forget that once you have your judgment and before you can try to execute on it, you need to pay a 5% registration tax on it. On money you are likely never to collect on..

Then you have the tax authorities. We have had our offices sealed for being late 1 day for 6,000 CFA ($12). A half dozen tax agents invaded our office manu militari, locked people in the office and sealed the outside, This is when they even had a motive. Our office was sealed so many times that we have lost count. No reason, no paper, nothing. You want to have it opened? Go and negotiate… Then there is another common practice. They send you bills for incredibly high amounts. We got one for 983 million CFA which covered a period during which we were under seal (we don’t negotiate, we just wait for them to get tired and unseal the office on our own so we have had sometimes periods of several months when we remained closed). So for this period, they want 983 million in taxes (almost $2 million). Sounds crazy but it is a tactic; to contest an invoice from tax authorities, you must pay a deposit of 10%. So the tax guys then came and offered to let us off with 30 million ($60,000), much less than the 10% we would have to pay to contest the bill! We refused. We were sealed. Eventually, they re-opened and abandoned the claim. The harassment is continuous. Just this past week we received a letter stating that we would be audited for the same period and the exact same transactions for which we have already been audited 3 times, paid moneys due, penalties, and so forth. They will probably seal us again soon J.

Fortunately, we don’t deal with customs much. But IT equipment and software are subject to 56% in customs tax and duties. In 2002, they briefly removed duties on some equipment but after 2 months, the duties were back on. Our other experience with customs is as a client. It is a very long story but to summarize: We delivered software as a matter of national emergency to Customs on the basis of a letter signed by the minister in charge of the project which stated that we would be paid in full the following week. That was in December 2006. It is not enough that we have not been paid. They actually launched a bid process, made us buy the bidding document, submit a proposal which is still being evaluated by a commission of 7 people all of whom are waiting to be “motivated” into awarding us a contract for software which the government has been using for 6 months. Then, if we are awarded the contract, we have to register it at 2% of the contract amount and then submit the invoice for payment.

I wish I could balance some of this with positive things to say about Cameroon . In all sincerity, there is not much. The food is good (although expensive). That’s it. Why am I still here you might ask? The answer is two-pronged: First, I did not have much choice. We lost $4 million on a project that I had to collect on and my presence was required (I was only partially successful in collecting) but more generally, this country belongs to all of us, not just to the thieves who are currently running the place (I am talking about private sector too not just government). There are a few people, in and out of government who really want things to change. They need support. If those of us who are privileged enough to say no to the corruption do not participate in the process, then who will do it? One cannot ask of someone who needs to feed his family to risk jail because he refused to give bribe to a policeman on the street.

So the next time you want to respond to an email where someone insulted you, stop and think; you are sacrificing your ego and not your life or welfare. Perhaps your keyboard could be used to do something more meaningful, like finding ways to support Manyu entrepreneurs who are unable to prosper because of the business climate, the lack of infrastructure, roads, etc. Perhaps you could suggest ways to better educate the Manyu child who is growing up in a Sodom and Gomorrah and has no point of reference to know better than to cheat, lie, beg or steal as a way to get through. Perhaps you could organize yourselves as a powerful lobby by officially contacting and meeting with authorities of US and international organizations to push an agenda which they can they push to the Cameroon government (I think we all agree that pushing an agenda to the Cameroon government directly is an exercise in futility).

I will be in the US soon (for security reasons I will not be specific as to exactly when) and hope to meet some of you while I am there. There is much more that I cannot say in an email but will not be afraid to say face to face.

I look forward to seeing positive, productive exchanges on Manyunet and NOMA-Manyu in preparation for upcoming elections. Let us set the example for Cameroonian politicians who are also entering an important election period.

Warm regards from your sister

Feli

Rexon,
The things Becky outlines are true to reality and depict the situation vividly.

Osih survives in that reality through his talent of hard-work. The man is a very hard-working man, that is why he is strongly encouraged by the leadership of the SDF. The young man is not yet 40, still he is in charge of 2 reputable international companies in civil aviation, he is the Vice Chairman of the SDF, the present provincial Chairman of the SW, Board member of several NGOs, candidate for Parliament in Ndian etc.
It is thus an example worth copying.
One way of bettering the society and fighting corruption is simply by doubling efforts in genuine work. Osih is doing just that. Living the reality of what Becky Enonchong outlines but working up to 15 hours a day in that pungent heat in Douala to surpass or overcome it.

rexon

Feli,

In good faith, i have always appreciated the work many in the leadership of the SDF have been doing to influence change. However, i am a bit concerned that part of your responsibility has always been to colour Mr Biyas democracy. Because with the government delegates, Biyas decree's, council secretaries appointed by the government of la republique which is very corrupt, you guys cannot achieve anything. Anyway, i dont want to delve into this topic, but as you will come to realise if you have not already realised this, that is how many people i have spoken to see the SDF. As a northwestener, i am afraid, all will fall on the head of my people. If we want to be an opposition be it in La Republiques politics or the Southern Cameroons, we should be tactical in our approach. Citizens of La Republique suffering here with their asylum cases in Europe are busy struggling to crucify our brother NJFN that he is the one colouring Mr Biya's democracy thereby giving the impression that things are stable. What they always say is that, previously NJFN was vocal, bold and active in his approach to our many problems. But now, he has sat quiet because he is "chopping" with the regime. I know we cannot verify that, but i just want to give you a feel of how people in the diasparo has been thinking. Note that i am not an asylee and have never been one, but i am very much involved in the different African movements in Western Europe primarily in UK and the Scandinavia and that is the impression many people have about your SDF. So you have a duty to work hard to regain all your disgruntled militants and sympatisers.

Cheers and God Bless you.

M Nje

Permit me comment on the politics of La Republique. It is without a doubt that the S.D.F. is helping to color La Republique as a democracy. In return the get a few M.Ps. and councils to run. These councils and M.Ps. provide a source of income for their members.

What are they expecting to do. Win the presidency of a country that their leader (Ni John) is not a citizen. GREED, GREED, GREED, and GREED is what is taking them to the polls every year. it is a shame.

Those of them who are thinking that without Biya, they will have a chance to the presidency are in a dream world. Biya, in consultation with his bus in Paris, is going to pick his successor when ever he decides to leave office or before his death. That successor will continue to win elections for the C.P.D.M. in La Republique.

Rexon, the frustration with the S.D.F. (from citizens of La Republique) is not limited to those abroad. Look at those at home. They are basically hopeless and see no way out. They see no need to even vote or register to do so. The recent drive by many foreign entities in La Republique (including the U.S. diplomatic personnel to encourage the population to register and vote) underscores that point. They (foreign entities) recognizes the dissatisfaction from the people and the lack of real pressure from those who claim to be “opposition”. That leaves you with many questions: why the complete change of attitude to the C.P.D.M. The same C.P.D.M. that was once considered (by the S.D.F.) to be so bad that no negotiation could be held with them without a third party. The answer is simple: you don`t bid the finger that feeds you.

The truth is that over the years the S.D.F. has blindly felt for peanuts from the C.P.D.M., help the C.P.D.M. to get many foreign assistance in the form of loans and other adjustments plans as a democracy. The C.P.D.M. government has in turn used such assistance to consolidate its power around La Republique and push the S.D.F. toward a corner in Ntarikom.

That is the reality of the issue.

The second issue is that the S.D.F. is doing a similar thing to our struggle. The truth is that many foreign observations see that the S.D.F. is mainly a political party dominated by Southern Cameroonians. The S.D.F. recognizes the authority of La Republique Du Cameroun over Southern Cameroons. Such observers are tempted to conclude that Southern Cameroonians are satisfy to be in an illegal occupation by La Republique.

The same effect that the SDF has on our struggle applies to those in the C.P.D.M and other political parties from Southern Cameroons. That is another reality.

It is the responsible of those who support the liberation of Southern Cameroons to make these distinctions as often as possible.

So the dissatisfaction with the S.D.F. is not limited to citizens of La Republique Du Cameroun. It extends to foreign entities which want to see a real chance in La Republique for the benefit of the people.

TAGRO

JOHN FRU NDI in a West African capital a few years ago took money from the French through the hands of a late West African president. That was followed by a deal where the French dissuaded the British Council from renting Mr. FRU NDI's building in Bamenda's Commercial Avenue, and PMUC (the French gambling outfit owned by the Corsican mafia) conveniently stepped in and is paying generously for Fru Ndi to continue coloring the criminal Franco-Camerounese junta as a democracy.

That is also why the brain thrust of the SDF abandoned the party or were pushed out. From people like the Yembes to Asonganyis. Fru Ndi and his SDF, like Paul Biya and his CPDM, are all surrogates and employees of the French being used to pauperize the African populations of the Southern Cameroons and la Repubublique Francaise du Cameroun.

What constitution is this SDF person really talking about? La Republique Francaise du Cameroun is a lawless French enclave still ruled by the French after they carried out a genocide there. They pass a law today that no one can be arretsed without a warrant, and the next day gendarmes are arresting people left and right with no warrants. The can not even respect their own administrative procedures, rules and regulations of organizing an election that they drew up! For over ten years, their so-called constitution mandates a Senate which will probably never see the light of day.

It is a joke and insult when Moukoury Moulema talks as if the parliament of la Republique Francaise du Cameroun is the British House of Commons, or even the Nigerian Congress. The only law there is the French surrogate/puppet, Paul Biya and the numerous court jesters including John Fru Ndi of Mvomeka, excuse me, Ntarikon.

rexon

M Nje and Tagro,

Now that we know all these explicit truth. What do we do? I say so because Southern Cameroonians were saying here that i want to destroy their party and their SCNC. I dont know what relationship the SCNC have with the SDF.

Secondly, there is a problem with our own struggle. If NJFN really received money from Mr Biya, then we have also "chopped" that money. I say so because one of our leaders Akwanga Ebenezer in his book "Smiling through hardship" acknowledge having received funding and some other forms of support from the SDF assistance he directly received from NJFN, Asonganyi, etc.

I like to learn. We might be misunderstanding/Understanding the whole truth about the SDF. What are they really up to? Sometimes, i dont really understand what they are up to. Because, in my opinion, only No-Coperation with La Republique can solve our problem. For those who believe in anything with La Republique, only a coordinated boycott to ground the system can change things there.

God bless you brothers and Sisters.

TAGRO

Rexon,

The only relationship I can see between the SDF and SCNC is that they are organisations inspired by the hopeless colonial status of the peoples of the Southern Cameroons.

Whether Fru Ndi gave assistance to a Southern Cameroonian nationalist is of no import to the struggle that nationalist is engaged in, it should not detract from that struggle.

The SDF is the enemy of the people of the Southern Cameroons. The burden to prove otherwise is the SDF's and theirs alone. We can not make excuses for them. There is no misunderstanding the SDF.

If we understand that the SDF has become the Trojan Horse of the Southern Cameroons Liberation Movement, there will be no confusion, personal sympathies and largess of its members to our nationalists notwithstanding. That indeed may be part of the ploy to create the type of misunderstanding you are expressing.

We must keep our eyes on the prize: the de-colonization and liberation of the Southern Cameroons from a genocidal France masquerading as la Republique Francaise du Cameroun.

(By the way, did you read recently how the French are being accused of trying to re-enact Rwanda by alledgedly being being behind the rocketing of the Ivoirian PM's plane?)

rexon

Tagro,

U have very fine ideas and wisdom. U can really be good for the struggle to decolonise the Southern Cameroons. Keep up.

Can u please forward the link where the French were accused for being behind the plot in Ivory Coast. We must not give this french masqueraders another chance to continue their enslavement of the Southern Cameroons.

Cheers and thank you brother.

Mr. Tagro,
this excerpt from your posting above is very telling indeed.
"The SDF is the enemy of the people of the Southern Cameroons. The burden to prove otherwise is the SDF's and theirs alone. We can not make excuses for them. There is no misunderstanding the SDF."
The burden of prove rests with the SDF? If you are an anglophile you will not make such a statement. Only someone imbued in French Law will say or make a statement of that sort. So who and what are you?
A traitor who made good and has fallen on hard times, and now wants to join the fold or a stupid anglophile who wants to lead but does not know Criminal Law as practised in the UK or France.
You accuse the SDF, it is for you to prove within reasonable doubt that the SDF is guilty of whatever crime.. etc etc. That is our anglophone law. Iam not a legal eagle, but I know that much.
You prove me wrong.

Shalom

Here they come again with French!!!!! Where do you think you are guys?

Rexon,
You are doing a good job. Don`t be distracted. The truth is that the should not be any working relationship between the S.D.F. and the struggle to liberate Southern Cameroon, neither should there be a relationship between the S.D.F. and the S.C.N.C. The two have diverging platforms.

Just like Tagro said, the S.D.F. is working contrary to the long term interest of the people of Southern Cameroons. We have to stay focus on the struggle. The truth will always prevail. It will not be long before Southern Cameroonians will realize what is behind their politician. One thing is clear, the S.D.F.`s change of behavior toward the C.P.D.M. leaves one with many unanswered questions. But remember this: the natural tendency of mankind is to be free from foreign rule. That has been the course of history. When ever people are ruled by a foreign entity, they will always end up to rise against such foreign domination.

Look at the constitutional and governance reforms Brown proposed today. It is a clear indication that the United Kingdom is not standing on a solid foundation; especially with devolution in Scotland.

I'm surprise at the comments you guys are making. accusing the sdf will not solve the problem of the anglophones. You all know that the sdf and the scnc are enemies of the cpdm and inorder for us to succeed, we must fight the cpdm at two directions. If you guys are dreaming of separation one then i tell you guys are wasting you precious time. The world is fighting for globalization and you guys are dreaming of segregation.

I have taken some time to explore all the influential quarters, political parties, and political situation in Cameroon, moving from town to town and from village to village. I have also taken time to examine all the lies and distortions posted on the Internet to sustain those who have conspired with Cameroon`s number one enemy - Paul Biya - to actually kill our beloved nation.

From all what we have in the field, Cameroonians have realized that some selfish individuals pretended to be out to chase Paul Biya out of Power, but that these selfish individuals are those secretly dinning with the very Paul Biya. Our man came out shouting following the frustration he had when Achidi Achu prevented him from going into the National Assembly under the colours of the CPDM. Frustrated, he abandoned the tiny bookshop he was mismanaging in Bamenda and then joined Albert Mukong and others to create our SDF party. After realizing that he could make big money from our party, our "politician of changing colours" drastically diverted the original intention that the true founders of the SDF had. He put his selfish interests ahead of the aspirations of the suffering Anglophone masses. The killing of six Anglophone children in Bamenda during the lauching of the SDF, the disgracefull exhibition of the nakedness of very old women in Bamenda, the cutting of the limbs of Anglophones, killing of people and burning down of houses and properties, meant nothing to this shameless politician.

When cornered and asked on what the French could do to afford security for their business in Bamenda, so that the people could never think of destroying French business in Bamenda, our Ntarikon Cat had this for the French: "If you want to get money from Bamenda in a way that the people will be blind to what you do, then open your business in my house. Only there in Bamenda can your business be protected." Today, all the hard earned moneys from Bamenda residents go to the French company that is paying our Ntarikon Cat trice the amount that his building deserves for rents.

And this "Cameleon of first order" has decided never to let others try to push Biya out of the presidency. Samuel Eboa gave him the chance. Adamou Ndam Njoya and others had given him the chance. WE all gave him the chance but after more than 15 years as the so-called opoosition Leader, Pa Jean has only succeded to become one of the richest politician in the entire sub Saharan African region - from nowhere. He has one of the biggest cattle fields in African and he has refused never to declare his assets. He pays taxes only when he is about to run for the presidency, although he knows that he can never rule this country. He refused to declare the money he collects from the CPDM and the Prime Minster even though he claims to be receiving them as opposition leader.

Jean Jacques Ekindi foolishly believed the NTarikon Cat and threw his total support behind him with the believe that he and the Ntarikon Thief had stroke a deal on how to deal with municipal and legislative elections. So Jean Jacques blindly supported the "Ntarikon Cameleon" even when he was chasing out intellectuals from the SDF. He had his shock of recent, with Pa Jean applying the same hypocrasy he is known of. After giving his support to the Ntarikon Thief during the last presidential elections, it was now time for the deal on municipal and legislative elections to be settled. Jean Jacques Ekindi was taken aback when Pa Jean vomitted the vernom he has in his stomach: "Look Mr Jean Jacques, politics no be book. I do not know the agreement you are talking about. Either you merge your small party with mine or you continue chasing Biya the intellectual way you want. Afterall, Cameroonians saw you on TV matching against the multiparty politics that I brought to our country." And to add injury to the whole issue, Pa Jean Jean actually hung up on Jean Jaqcue Ekindi. Immediately the sad news was made public, Adamu Ndan Njoya phoned Jean Jacque Ekindi with just one question: "Have you experienced it for yourself. I told you Cameroonians can not rely on this stack illiterate?"

Today, Pa Jean of Ntarikon is doing everything to make sure that he maintains some of his blind supporters in parliament. This is to ensure that he continues to receive his salaries from them. To enforce this, the Ntarikon cat is making dubious and secret deals with the CPDM so as to maintain a grip only on the North West province. He has arranged to give Kumba to the CPDM so as to take over Balikumbat. After forcing the lame John Kuhtem into the grave, his real people are now fighting to eat everything.

As some CPDM politicians are fighting to make Biya life President, they are using the "stomach politics" of our Ntarikon cat to make sure their plan works. This explains why they have included the setting up of a special statute for the opposition leader in the proposed bill that will give Biya authority to run for the presidency in 2011. The most disturbing thing in all this is that these CPDM politicians are actually consulting with Pa Jean and his parliamentary leader on the drafting of this proposed bill. Let us wait and see.

Today, every Cameroonian wants to eat too, just as the Ntarikon Cat is eating. In Belgium, France, Germany, etc. even SDF militants were actually attending CPDM rallies and elections, with CPDM uniforms, thereby giving the impression that Biya is the right man for this country. Here in Cameroon, everyone was fighting to get a position in the corrupt CPDM with the point that, "If the Ntarikon Cat" can be openly eating from the CPDM, why must I too not eat?" "If the Ntarikon Cat can be pushing his thieves like Bad Ndam, Thiefman Yoyo, Mbami, etc. to go and fetch his salary from parliament, why must I too not join the CPDM to be able to eat?"

And you know what? This Ntarikon Cat has lost respect even before his children. The man openly displayed the photograph of their late mother during meetings of the NEC in his Ntarikon palace. He was sitting on a table covered with the SDF flag, with the photogragh of his late wife hanging over his head. No politician has ever gone so low. This is something that the grassland won`t tolerate!

What about the dialoque that Pa Jean`s handpicked Sec. General was begging Biya for? What about the pressure that Pa Jean was putting on diplomatic missions in Yaounde for an Independent Electoral Commission? What about the "No ELECAM NO ELECTIONS"? How far has Pa Jean gone with his decision to bring pressure on the Biya government to release Colonel Chi and his other Ntarikon trained Taliban Militiamen?

I will be writing ...
