Mo Ibrahim Foundation, a London based organisation formed by Dr. Mo Ibrahim, has named Nelson Mandela, former South Africa President, second laureate of an Honorary Award, in recognition for his extraordinary leadership qualities and achievements.
According to report, the award ceremony would take place during a gala at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt.The first laureate to the award, Joachim Chissano, former President of Mozambique, was named in October 2007, for his achievement in African Leadership. He won the world's largest prize, worth US$ 5 million for over ten years.
Both laureates would be honoured in a concert with performances by Youssou N'Dour, Salif Keita, Anjelique Kidjo and Mohamed Mounir.Dr. Mo Ibrahim is quoted to have said Mandela stands tall as a candidate in South Africa and throughout the world and to all who share his devotion to democracy and equality.
"In presenting this Laureate, the Foundation would like to celebrate his extraordinary achievements and support the important work of the foundations he has established," said Dr. Ibrahim.
In recognition of the award, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation is also making a grant to the four organisations carrying on the work of Nelson Mandela and his wife, Graça Machel - the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, and the Foundation for Community Development in Mozambique.
Mo Ibrahim is a Sudanese multi-billionaire who owns CETEC, a telecommunication's Company found in 28 African countries.His Foundation was established in 2006 to support the attainment of good governance in Africa.
The yearly leadership prize for Achievement in Leadership is worth $ 5 million for the first ten years and $ 200.000 annually for life thereafter.
