Interviewed By Innocent Mbunwe
Olympic Muyuka President, Hon. Robert
Scott Awanga, who doubles as President of Metro Security Oshie, Mbengwi, has claimed that his team is financially viable to qualify for MTN Elite II. In a chat with The Post at the Molyko Omnisport Stadium during an encounter between Southwest based professional footballers versus a local selection, Awanga said he wants Olympic Muyuka to pick an MTN Elite II ticket come next football season. He also revealed his intention to help his players to empower themselves economically.
The Post: What are your impressions after watching a match between SW based professionals and a local selection?
Hon. Robert Scott Awanga: I think it was very impressive. And rating
our local players, they need some training in order to perfect their
talents.
How do you assess the professionals, did they meet with the required standard?
Yes, but if I want to compare the performance of the professionals with that of local players, it was almost equal. I don't really know the standards, since I have never been a footballer, but they played almost in the same way as the local players.
Olympic Muyuka is doing very well at the Southwest Division II championship, what is the force behind it?
To keep up this team, one needs to finance them. That is why I came in to make sure that they have all the necessary equipments needed for the team to qualify for the MTN Elite II championship. We have made sure that they have all the necessary logistics; doctors, feeding and accommodation.
Team presidents have come and gone; for how long are you going to sustain the club financially?
As long as they are interested to be footballers. In fact, I have been looking for a way to help young people use their talents to empower themselves economically. So, I think this is one good avenue to help them.
Where do you get the finances?
I am the Director of Metro Security and also Metro Fields and Construction Company. These companies are mine, so, I make my money from my businesses.
Are you saying that the team is part of your company?
No, it is not part of the company. This is some kind of a philanthropic move to help young Cameroonians gain from their talents.
Do you have any plan of selling players abroad?
Normally, since that is where the economic advantage is, we would make
it possible for the young players to go out sand benefit economically.
We are selling footballers.
As a football official, what would you say about the present
performance of the Lions in the 2010 joined World/African Nations Cup
qualifiers?
I want to thank these players for promoting Cameroon football. They have made us proud and are still doing so. By their performances, they are helping to sell the talents of younger players.
