World Bank Supports Health Sector

The World Bank Board of Directors June 24 approved the financing of the Health Sector Support Investment Project for Cameroon.

The financing agency is the International Development Association, IDA. The programme, which is under preparation, will support the implementation of the updated health sector strategy in order to achieve development goals.

The projects will enable Cameroon to achieve better health and nutrition outcomes towards reducing poverty. The goal is to work with other partners to get Cameroon back on track towards development goals.

The project development objective is to increase utilisation and improve on child and maternal health and communicable diseases.The proposed project has two components. The first part will provide support to annual performance- based contracts with district health authorities, NGOs and the health facilities and medical equipment.

Meanwhile, the second component will strengthen the Ministry of Health at the national performance contracting and a unified information system to generate up-to-date, reliable, financial performance, through the provision of technical assistance, training, goods and equipment.

The proposed operation will also assist the Ministry of Health to refine its medium-term expenditure.It will equally provide flexible financing in support of the Ministry of Health's programme whose financing will be coordinated with funds from the French Development Agency.

Complementary contributions will come from other partners like the ADB and UNICEF.
