Some 510.000 Cameroonians are infected with the HIV/AIDS virus, the Minister of Public Health, announced recently. Amongst those infected persons, according to the Minister, only 55.000 have been duly registered in government hospitals and are being taken care of by the state.
Mama Fouda made the disclosure while launching activities marking commemoration of the World AIDS day, December 1.The Minister called on women to take frontline positions in the fight against the spread of the pandemic, given that they have the highest prevalence rate of 6.5 as opposed to 4.5 percent of their male counterparts.
The high prevalence rate of women could be explained by the fact that they are the receptive sex. The Public Health Ministry, in its 2009 plan of action, is planning to step up its fight against HIV/AIDS, by constantly organising AIDS campaigns and also ensuring a permanent supply of anti-retroviral drugs to health units.
