A man was burnt alive at the Sodiko bus stop in Bonaberi, Thursday 20, at 5 a.m. reportedly for nicking away a woman’s handbag. Eyewitnesses say the man was sighted by another man who had been watching, and raised an alarm.
Police got to the scene just to find the man already unconscious. He died on his way to hospital. In a related story, police intercepted a gang of five alleged thieves same day as they attempted to break into a building in the Tergal neighbourhood in Douala, wounding at least two persons.
Two of the bandits, one reportedly armed, were intercepted by the police. The rest of them made away with a couple of cell phones and other items.
Artists Remember Kotto Bass
Artists in Douala gathered, Thursday 20, to remember makossa and soukous maestro, Theodore Nyamsi Kotto, aka Kotto Bass, 12 years after he died. Amidst prayer and meditation, the artists and family members laid wreaths on the grave of Kotto Bass, located at the Bonaberi cemetery.

Kotto Bass died on November 20, 1996 under mysterious circumstances. His death provoked misunderstanding amongst family members and the public over the circumstances under which he died. He had three albums to his credit.
Lapiro Appeal Pushed To December 30
Lawyers at the Wouri High Court have pushed forward an appeal file forwarded by lawyers of incarcerated musician, Lambo Pierre Roger alias Lapiro de Mbanga. Lapiro and his lawyers appeared in court on Wednesday, November 26, to push forward the case. It was Lapiro’s first outing from his room 18 of the Douala Central Prison, New Bell, after he was convicted for a three-year jail term plus a fine of CFA 280 million.
The outspoken musician was jailed for masterminding the February 24-29 nation wide drivers’ strike in his region, Mbanga. He has since denied the charges. His appeal case will be continued on December 30.
Corpse Of Septuagenarian Abandoned
The corpse of a 75-year-old man was discovered Tuesday, November 25, in an advanced state of decomposition. Neighbours forced open his door in his Ndogsibi residence, after they did not see him for days. Neighbours say the man was a retired worker, an indigene of Yokadouma in the East Province, who had been living alone in that vicinity for close to 24 years.
The man had reportedly been knocked down by a motorbike one week before and had since then been lying in his bed alone. Elements of the fire brigade reportedly came to the scene and left the corpse in the hands of a man who showed up as a nephew of the deceased. The man promised to return with a vehicle to carry the corpse but never returned.
Assailants Stab Man, Take Away Property
Gunmen are reported to have stabbed a man at his Derrier Poteau neighbourhood home in Douala, over the weekend.The victim, one Serge Koloko is currently receiving treatment at the Douala referral hospital, the Laquintinie. The yet to be identified assailants reportedly made away with some of his possessions.
In a related banditry case, an alleged bandit was over the weekend killed in mob action at the PK 12 neighbourhood. The accused is said to have been arrested by the public and lynched after he was accused of attempted robbery. His corpse was ferried to a local hospital nearby by fire fighters.
Boats To Start Transportation Over Wouri
The Government Delegate to the Douala Urban Council has announced that boats might soon start transporting people across the Wouri River. Fritz Ntone Ntone made the declaration early this week at the end of the third session of the Internal Follow-up Committee in charge of council project execution.
Dr. Ntone did not announce any further details on the project but said the project could start in the month of February 2009. The Secretary General at the Douala Urban Council announced that the decision was the resolution brought about by the committee aimed at solving the chronic traffic jam and congestion because of the lone bridge that links Bonaberi area to down town Akwa.
Traffic jam has become even more intense within the past few days following construction work re-launched on the road recently.
