There are fundamentally three sectors that are necessary for a balanced, successful society. These are the government/politics (public sector), businesses (private sector), and the objective/independent sector (consisting of intellectuals/educational institutions, the judiciary, etc.).

Cameroon fails because it is almost totally dominated by the public sector, which controls everything else (including intellectuals and judicial practitioners). This leads to a pervasive partisan atmosphere in the country, and a total neglect of reason. This is the recipe for misleading decision making.

In successful societies the most powerful sector is the independent/objective sector, which is the brains behind most undertakings in the country. Through the work of intellectuals, it advises the other sectors so that they can make better decisions. The power of these intellectuals is not usually visible, only operating in the background. However, their impact is profound insofar as they are the foundation stone on which the power of the nation rests. This is why good intellectuals are desired everywhere in successful countries.

Thank you Opio. In Cameroon, the Ideological Superstructure (an attribute of historical materialism--thanks to Karl Marx: The Critique of Capital and/or The Communist Manifesto) is not independent. In Cameroon, the ideological superstructure (all institutions that make society to function) has been frenchified and hijacked by two succesive neopatrimonial regimes (Ahidjo/Biya). For example, vice chancellors are appointed rather than searched for and their merits examined by a committee of experts; instructors become professors as a result of their political activities and how many times they go out and compaign and rig elections in their constituencies for the master. Intellectuals in Cameroon who seek political appointments have become despoiled and emasculated mythomaniacs. For example, Dr. Peter Agbor Tabi goes to Mamfe and tells people to vote for Biya because heavy equipments have been assembled at Mabanda, Kumba, for work to begin on the Kumba-Mamfe road knowing fully well that those rusted machines have been abandoned at that location for over 20 years. Another example is sacked minister-without-portfolio, Dr. Peter (poster boy) Abety, who lied that the population of Bambili is more than that of Bafut in an attempt to prevent Bafut from becoming a sub-division. Also, for his long tenure in parliament, Dr. Solomon Shu, ex-CPDM parliamentarian from Bafut (now retired) never spent a franc from money for micro-projects on anything that benefitted the people. You can list numerous examples of so-called intellectuals who fall into the trappings of politics and become seasoned liers. It is a very sad situation.

Azore Opio's essay only makes sense if intellectual laments go beyond observational critiques to attacking, rebuking and dekunking the premise of falsehood on which the foundations of the so-called Cameroun state/polity have been built in so shameless decadence by raising the stakes and taking/making that daring step/move into the unknown shadow of the future--reclaiming our beloved fatherland from Cameroun Proper! No two ways about that!

In retrospect, however, it would seem we (Ambazonians/"Southern Cameroonians" or "West Cameroonians") are begging our neighbor (Cameroun) to rule us, moralize for us. That too is as shameful, as cheap as it is insulting! That is what amounts to intellectual dishonesty, hypocrisy and cowardice which has failed, thus far, to help any corrupt and brutal polity world-wide recover from her ills: thus only one way solution is necessary to keep Cameroun Proper at bay that they may, if they so chose, decay in their house of decadence, by themselves: send the bad polity packing out of Ambazonia (Southern Cameroons)--there are no two ways about this, lest we spend another life time in hopelessness, disorderliness and lawlessness punctuated with fruitless lamentations!

The decadence in Cameroun goes without stopping and beyond Ahidjo/Biya ancient regime type of monarchy, the intellectuals failing to raise stakes in active political protests long proven in history to topple such regimes, becomes a victim of manipulation by their own peers and kins who long to continue fulfilling their old and greedy wishes of selfish gains atthe expense of the masses and by the making and tolerance of their so-called intellectuals!

Holistically, the blame falls back on the erstwhile West Cameroon/Southern Cameroon politicians (themselves cronies!) who discovered early enough that the true Camerounian mind was not as developed in servitude to national politics but hung in there for their own petite gains, thereby invariably participating in victimizing both the true Camerounians and the wantonly exploited and badly abused masses of todays Ambazonia!

Therefore, to be sure and if I must insist for sanity sake, the Adolf Hitlers of Cameroun, just like the Hitler of old have never been and will never be intellectuals!
Free Southern Cameroons/West Cameroon as Ambazonia and the rest is history, bad history--one in which we learnt, one more time,to park our bags and run, this time for good! Bottomline: the intellectual is also called to become, beyond bookwarmaniacs, active and warring militants!

What is the difference between a politician and an intellectual? Holding an acadmic qualification doesn't bar you from playing politics, neither will politics also undress you of your intellectual qualities. Infact, in principle an intellectual should make an excellent politician. In the Cameroon context, we are mixing up things by addressing some citizens as intellectuals that have turned politicians. They are just politicians and not intellectuals and if intellectuals are to feed politicians with ideas, then politicians are waiting for those intellectuals to come up. Where are they? Intellectuals are never cowards. Intellectuals are supposed to be philosophers per se, not materialistic, never relenting but always attacking and defining. It's unfortunate the foundation of the Cameroon society was never intellectually but politically laid.



He was a man who stood the test of time in the academic arena and his whole life(spiritualist,careerist,politician,traditionalist etc)exuded intellectualism.Being a devout catholic(was a seminarian),he lived a simple and holistic life.His activeness in church life taught us that intellectual prowess doesnot desociate a person from His Saviour and his simplicity taught us that no matter how many PhD's you may have backed in life we shall all answer to the eternal call, "Oh,Man,you are dust and unto dust you shall return".
As a true teacher,he imparted knowledge to so many people who are today occupying posts of responsibility in all sectors of society.His simplicity and love for the teaching profession,is a call for us to be dedicated and devoted to our duties.He remained a teacher to the end.
It is said that erstwhile President Ahmadou Ahidjo respected him with reverence.And that he was the only anglophone Cameroonian the authoritarian ever listened to.Certainly,this was because of his foresight,impartial and morally upright nature.He occupied many Ministerial posts and wherever he became Minister his impact was felt.
It is remarkable to note how he blended tradition with christianity.Not surprisingly he was given the title of 'Faay-wo-Bastos'.This is an indication that he was a worthy son of the soil and in perfect communion with his Nso ancestors.His philantropy cannot be beleaboured as he sent so many Nso indigenes to school from his personal finances.The bringing of SCAN water(a Canadian)company to Kumbo.
His Legacy will live forever.We may never see the likes of him again.That was a true intellectual.



Intellectuals are producers of intangible goods which have far reaching consequences in any society. And like any economic producers we need to look at the 3 basic questions, what to produce, how to produce and to whom to produced.
In looking at Cameroon intellectuals we can also try to know from which rank of our society do they come from. That why I have been critical with Azore Opio observation because I have not see a clear cut answer to this.
Lets take a at look as his measurement of intellectuality in Cameroon intellectual's effectiveness in society depends on his /her vision; their ability to observe accurately social problems of their times and formulate solutions to them. (Karl Mannheim, Ideology and Utopia, 1929). This is fine standard and I have read a great deal of the works of Cameroonian intellectuals , the mongo Bridge by George Ngwane who have a fine road to curb tribalism and build national intergration, BERNARD FONLON and his writings on human rights in a despotic political climate and many more you name them. The solutions to Cameroon problems have been long documented and is continually being debated in the Scholar cycle in Cameroon and beyond. Nobody have a unified answer to every social problems but some solutions can show light where there is darkness. Jean Jacques Roseau at the time of the French revolution had a fine way towards social arrangements but today his solution would have been more problematic than he hope for(Enerst Backer Interdisplinary perspective on the problem of Man).Classification of humanity have not disappeared but it now too sub-divided such that its no-longer a problem to society beside people can move to and from other classes base on many factors and most especially on personal wants(David Richardo individual satisfaction leads to public satisfaction)
How to produce, I will agree with AA Agbormbai classification (please check on AA Agbormbai writings above ) on the climate of production, the private sector had shown to produce the best and highest quantity of goods in our today world as compare to the public. So advocating for more freedom is very welcomed, this depends on the public sectors ability to regulate and help build institution for the private sector.
We then see the public sector as the middle man who communicates the products of the intellectuals as well as any other producers to the rest of the population. This is where politics plays a major role. I have seen in advance democracy where the intellectual debates have been worn but rejected by politicians (US policy on Climate Change for example) or society (Europeans vote to hold or halt EU expansion). This is often due to the complex and ever-changing relationship between politicians and the rest of the populace and democracy finds its way into these interplays. The case in Cameroon is partly due to the political regime and its dominations of the willingness of the people. They dictates and decides for the people .On the other hand how many of us find time to drink and ponder on some of the works of our intellectuals, our zeal and appetite for the West have blinded us from the reality on the ground.
Finally we must appreciate that intellectuals come from all ranks and works of life, I will agree that the Cameroon teachers have been dominating the school of intellectuals, this is no excuse to forget the works of Cameroon mathematicians, Physics’, Medical doctors, economist who are doing a great deal to get us out of our present predicament.
