The Limbe Urban Council, LUC, Wednesday, May 24, awarded some 455 students drawn from 24 secondary schools in the Southwest Province and eight others from the Universities of Buea and Douala, FCFA 13.350 million as scholarship money.
Among the recipients was Saker Baptist College Limbe where 47 students bagged FCFA 2,350,000, with each student being entitled to FCFA 50,000.Some 117 students in GHS Limbe got FCFA 2,340,000, each receiving FCFA 20,000. 14 other students from GHS Bonjongo bagged FCFA 280,000.
GTHS Ombe had five recipients receiving FCFA 128,000 while other recipients came from Christ The King College Tiko, Regina Pacis College Mutengene, Baptist High School Buea and a school from Kumba.
Seven students from the University of Buea received 350,000, each entitled to FCFA 50,000. A student from the University of Douala was offered FCFA 50,000.Cheques for the scholarship money were handed over to the Principals and representatives of the various recipient institutions at the Limbe Conference Centre by the Government Delegate, Samuel Ebiama Lifanda.
Some schools, which did not have bank accounts, were paid in cash.While handing over the cheques, Lifanda said for the past years the Council decided to support the efforts of teachers by assisting some of their meritorious students who, due to financial difficulties, cannot fully pay for their education.
"Limbe Urban Council is committed to promoting education and will always be ready to augment its support to schools and colleges within the means available," the Government Delegate said.
Lifanda announced that the amount given out this year has increased by FCFA 2.5 million and that by 2007, it will be raised to FCFA 20 million to give opportunity to many more beneficiaries. He said they would extend the assistance to students in training centres like OIC in Buea.
The Delegate promised to publish the names of the beneficiaries in the Council Chambers. He called on parents to consult the list and ensure that their children are given the money.
Happy Recipients
Kofele Luma Memorial College Limbe was one of the recipient institutions. Twelve students were given FCFA 600,000. In a chat with the press, they thanked the Council and the Delegate for the offer.
Besides the scholarships, the Council also distributed essential drugs for first aid treatment to 57 primary schools in Limbe Sub-division.
