Banditry where armed robbers break into homes and steal valuables, sometimes leaving victims seriously wounded, is on an alarming increase in Kumba.
This wave of banditry comes shortly after Southwest Governor, Louis Eyeya Zanga, had congratulated the new Commissioner for Kumba Central Police Station, Andre Fils Ella Menye.
Immediately after the Governor's departure, a gang of bandits around Club Number I area, kept attacking passengers and riders of commercial motorbikes, fleecing them of large sums of money.
Recently, a group of eight bandits reportedly attacked one James Ndumbe, a commercial agent with a cigarette company, and made away with FCFA 1.5 million.Ndumbe, who is presently receiving treatment at the Kumba District Hospital, encountered the bandits when he was returning from a business trip from Meme villages.
Since Ndumbe was late and couldn't take his money from sales to the bank, he carried it to his house.The Post learned that the bandits fired several bullets at Ndumbe's door before entering it and shooting the victim in his lap. Then they collected the money and vamoosed.
Also, on Sunday, April 15, another group of bandits reportedly besieged Molango Street neighbourhood and broke into close to ten houses, making away with money and other valuables.
Gendarmes are said to have confronted the bandits, firing guns in an attempt to quell their operation.In the process, the forces of law and order caught one of the robbers who had received a bullet in his leg.
The bandit, who was detained at the Kumba Gendarmerie Brigade, reportedly made confessional statements, which led to the arrest of two of his accomplices.Inhabitants of Kumba have implored the administration to tighten security measures in the town especially with the coming of the rainy season, which is usually accompanied by frequent power cuts.
