The victories recorded in CPDM, WCPDM and YCPDM Fako III Section elections, Sunday, April 15, were crushing and humiliating.
Mbella Moki stood tallest at election
Charles Mbella Moki, Buea Mayor, settled his party scores with incumbent CPDM Fako III President, Arthur Lysinge, in a landslide 325 to 225 victory. Incumbent YCPDM President, Emmanuel Mbome Motomby, humbled rivals, Bernard Mbella Mwambo and George Mafany Teke, in another crushing victory, 248, 78 and 94 respectively.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament, MP, for Buea Rural, Hon. Emilia Lifaka, backed out of the fight, "for the sake of peace and love", at the eleventh hour and gave her rival, Hannah Etonde Mbua, total victory.
Earlier, on Friday, April 13, Mbella Moki had defeated Arthur Lysinge alongside two others, Hon. Sammy Najeme and Jacob Otte Mokenge, 1st Deputy Mayor of Buea Council, but had failed to secure an absolute majority. Also, Hon. Emilia Lifaka who had a slight victory against Hannah Mbua and Vevanje Enjema, also failed to get an absolute majority.
They had to go for re-runs against their immediate rivals, in terms of votes, according to a text regulating elections within the CPDM.But Hon Lifaka had contested the Committee's decision for a re-run claiming that the text had not been read to electorates before the elections.
Many said it was a shame that an MP should be ignorant of laws guiding elections in the party she represents in Parliament. The tension, intrigues, fraud and verbal grenades to gain Fako III Presidency would have erupted ten mountains. During the first run, the number of voters surpassed the Electoral College but the committee later tightened security to check ghost voters.
The Fako III CPDM electorate showed their disappointment and derision for former Member of Parliament, Hon. Sammy Najeme, by not voting for him. Hon. Najeme, who had staged a comeback to gain the Fako III Presidency, in the first run on Friday, picked only two out of 572 votes. Many party militants had openly criticised him for using his term of office, as an MP, for self-aggrandisement.
Some CPDM militants told The Post, on anonymous basis, that he had only represented his family and himself not the people who gave him power. Outgoing CPDM Fako III President came close to boycotting the elections arguing that Mbella Moki had camped a cross-section of the electorate at a certain college before the elections.
In spite of the long-standing rivalry between the two, Arthur Lysinge and Mbella Moki managed a show of friendship in an-after-elections embrace. One of the elections supervisors, Hon. Paul Meoto Njie pleaded severally for peace, love and unity within the party. According to him, Fako III is very vital to the party and so militants must stay united if they hope to defeat the opposition.
Happy Mbella Moki
Local CPDM party sources told The Post that Fako III is one of the most coveted Sections in the country, which even CPDM hierarchy are not ready to loose to the opposition. Party insiders say the fight for Fako III President was so fierce because anyone who wins the presidency has greater chances of gaining the Council and the Glass House.
Despite his victory, even local party authorities are yet to know where the Buea Mayor has his interest, whether to maintain his mayoral seat or go to the Glass House.Mbella Moki told the press, after the elections, that his victory is for all people of goodwill in Buea.
"We need everybody in the party so that we can work together. I think we can do the job. If you look at the men who constitute the executive, they are a great team. We will extend our hands to his rival and hope they would join us to work together to deliver the goods," Mbella said.
Meanwhile, Hon. Rose Makia Abunaw beat Alice Ayuk Tambe by 217 votes to 146 to become WCPDM Section President for Mamfe Central, while Daniel Emoh Takoh defeated Benson Agbor Besong to accede Mamfe Central CPDM Presidency. Eyong Tabot Eyong defeated Agbor Besong Arrey to win the YCPDM Presidency of Mamfe Central.
On the international scene, Dr. Gabriel Soungwa won the Presidency of CPDM Berlin East Section in Germany while Joe Mbu and Patience Tamfu were elected CPDM and WCPDM presidents in the USA. Also Jean Pierre Atangana won the YCPDM president in the US.
Southwest Provincial Committee Chairman of the CPDM reorganisation, Rt. Hon. Simon Achidi Achu, told the Press that the elections in the province have been very competitive and the candidates and electorates have been very keen.
He denied claims of irregularities in the elections, especially in Buea, arguing that due to the competitiveness of the candidates and their desire to win, everyone insisted to have his opinion heard.
