A gang of nearly a dozen armed bandits recently broke into Donga-Mantung Divisional Treasury in Nkambe and stole money and other valuables estimated at FCFA 21.5 million.
The Divisional Treasurer for Donga-Mantung, Christopher Adamu Sama, who narrated his ordeal with the bandits, said it all began at about 8 pm that fateful day.He said the bandits first disabled the night watchman at the neighbouring Divisional Delegation of Labour and Social Security.
"They tied the young man and asked him to cooperate or else he would lose his life…" the Treasurer explained. He said the gunmen then proceeded to the Treasury building that equally hosts the Finance Controller's Department, the Divisional Delegation of Taxation and some services of the National Social Insurance Fund, where the old night watchman was bundled up.
Adamu Sama said five of the bandits used a ladder to climb up to the building. He said they banged the door but he pleaded with them and then opened the door from inside.According to Adamu, the bandits then went on to threaten him and his family. Rummaging in Adamu's office, they cleaned out FCFA 266,000 from his office drawer.
Proceeding to the Stamp Duty Officer's office, they picked FCFA 238,000 and a fiscal stamp leaflet worth FCFA 100,000. When they stumbled on the keys of the strong room, and that of the main safe, they used an electric gadget to cut away the main iron that barred the safe cover and swept out over FCFA 18.5 million.
The Divisional Treasurer told The Post that of the FCFA 18.5 million, FCFA 17 million was pension arrears for two widows sent from Yaounde three weeks ago. After accomplishing their mission, the bandits vamoosed. It was only later that night that Adamu rushed to the gendarmerie to report the theft. A manhunt was launched immediately.
