The University of Buea, UB, has admitted some 3500 fresh students for the 2007/2008 academic year, UB authorities revealed to The Post, Monday, September 24.
UB Registrar, Prof Victor Julius Ngoh, disclosed that close to 6000 students have applied for the undergraduate studies in the five faculties of the varsity. Out of this number, 455 of the applicants are holders of the Baccalaureate.
According to the Registrar, only about 3500, barely half of the total number will be admitted. Unlike last year, the admission of students this year is based strictly on results certified by the Cameroon General Certificate of Education Board, CGCEB. This, the Registrar said is to prevent the use of fraudulent documents hitherto used by some students to get into the University.
To supplement the teaching staff, he revealed that the Minister of Higher Education, Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo, has given the University of Buea the authority to recruit more teachers. He also revealed that the library would be extended with more books in stock, while the laboratories would be improved upon.
Prof. Ngoh further revealed that the Bachelor-Masters-PhD (BMP) system, which is a novelty to Cameroon's French speaking Universities, would be strengthened, with each course bearing up to six or nine credits, as opposed to the three credits formerly used.
This system, he said, would provide for more hours of tutorial work and would neither affect those who are already studying, or have graduated from the University of Buea. To this effect, an orientation exercise would be conducted on a yet to be announced date, to sensitise new and returning students alike, on the BMP system.
This orientation, the Registrar stressed, would be obligatory to all students, without which they will not be allowed to register. Also, Prof Ngoh revealed that UB authorities hope to work out strategies with its partner banks to ensure that the payment of fees is decentralised.
It should be noted that Prof. Ngoh just submitted a report to the Minister of Higher Education based on a seminar he attended on "The Administration of Higher Education in Africa", that took place in China recently. It is hoped that Cameroon's Higher Educational system would adopt some positive ideas from the Chinese higher educational system.
