The Resident Representative of the UN in Cameroon, Sophie De Caen, has called on Cameroonians to stand up and speak out against poverty and press for the achievements of the UN Millennium Development Goals, MDGs.
She made the call in Yaounde on October 10 while briefing journalists on some events that would culminate in the celebration of the UN Day on October 24.
While highlighting the priority actions of the new UN scribe, H. E. Ban Ki-Moon, that are aimed at building "a stronger United Nations for a better world", Sophie De Caen urged Cameroonians to declare an all-out war against poverty and also push the government to accelerate reforms that will lead them to achieve the MDGs.
Drawing inspiration from a document Ban Ki-Moon wrote captioned "My priorities as United Nations Secretary General," the UN officials coined the theme of the celebration of the UN Day in Cameroon from the spirit of MDG number 2 that calls for universal primary education for all - "Education for all to fight against poverty and sustain our environment."
During the UN Millennium Summit in New York in 2000, various governments of the world, especially those of Africa pledged to achieve the MDGs that would ameliorate the living conditions of their citizens by 2015. But Sophie De Caen regretted that barely eight years away from 2015, Cameroon like many African countries south of the Sahara, are yet to make any significant progress towards achieving such goals.
She regretted that Cameroon which is endowed with much natural and
human resources is experiencing a high degree of poverty in which its
citizens are presently wallowing.
It is against the backdrop of such a situation that the UN is using the
commemoration of the day to sensitise governments and citizens about
the importance of achieving the MDGs.
In Cameroon, events on the commemoration of the UN Day will gather steam on October 16 with pupils from some primary schools in the ten provinces, standing up and speaking out in a symbolic gesture against poverty.
According to the UN Information Officer in Yaounde, Anne Nsang Nkwain, one school each has been selected from all the provinces to host the event. She said officials would join the pupils to stand up and speak out against poverty.
Thus, millions of people all over the world will rise tomorrow, Tuesday, October 16 against poverty and for the MDGs by 12 noon.According to UN officials, the act of standing up against poverty must occur dynamically from sitting or kneeling positions.
At a given signal, all participants in a specific location will stand up for at least one minute. People with disabilities will be counted as long as they are present at the stand-up moment and perform an appropriate action of their choice.
UN officials should stop pretending as if they don’t know their duties to hand
Over the sovereignty of Southern Cameroons. They are constantly running away
From the truth and airing issues they have also failed to address like election
Rigging, corruption and the crucification of human rights in Southern Cameroons by
The colonialist .I there
Fore call on the UN, AU, UNPO, SOUTHERN CAMEROONIANS, UK, EU, Bush and
His administration and the entire international community to stand up and face the truth for the sake of justice and world peace.
Only the truth can set us free. Delaying to peacefully restore her statehood may
Lead to another international out cry which could have been avoided.
Consequences will be world wide and not only in Southern Cameroon’s and come rain come sun,
The independence shall be guaranteed because it is not build on falsehood.
THE ELLIGAL AND UNHOLY MARRIAGE DID NOT WORK.
Long live Southern Cameroon’s
Long live the SCNC
