17-year-old Christelle Tchaptchet was Sunday January 3 killed some distance from the central town under circumstances not yet known.
Her sister, who is a journalist with one of the radio stations in Yaounde, explained that her sister left the house in the Tropicana neighbourhood at about 5 pm to do her hair in preparation for school on Monday. At about 11 pm, the family was jolted by a phone call from one of Christelle's friends indicating that the lifeless body of their daughter was found at Carrefour Awae.
As the sister explained, the girl
was stabbed in the lower abdomen and in the chest. While the corpse is
lying at the Yaounde Central Hospital mortuary, the judicial police
have started investigations. Two of the young Christelle's teachers
suspected to be implicated in the brutal murder have been arrested.
Parking Lot Rip-off
Following the institution of paid parking lots in Yaounde, defaulters continue to fall prey to the agents of the Yaounde City Council. Owners of impounded cars are now parting with from FCFA 50,000 upwards. But, if the owner is lucky to meet the people he/she pays FCFA 25,000 without any negotiation.
The space in front of the Chantal Biya
International Research Centre, CIRCB, where there is a sign post
indicating that parking is forbidden, is one of such spaces to avoid.
One Tchaptang Rene was one of the victims recently. He had to cough
FCFA 25,000 for a special iron to be removed from his car.
Transport Agencies AT Tongolo Stranded
Travel agencies in the Tongolo neighbourhood are stranded as rehabilitation work has started on that stretch of the road. Though some of the proprietors of the agencies say the city council did not inform them to quit, some acknowledge that they were told to move to the park at Olembe.
The problem with Olembe Park, they say, is that the
site is not practicable. The rehabilitation work would last for 12
months. Inhabitants of Yaounde would testify that this part of the road
had become an eyesore to the capital. Some drivers avoided this road.
During the rainy season, certain parts of the road looked like swimming
pools.
Mad Man Claims Authority Over Dustbin
A mad man, aka Eto Fils because he has an old ball with which he plays, who is camped close to a dustbin in the Melen neighbourhood, has laid claim on the dustbin. On January 4, he warned some photo laboratory workers who went to burn cuttings to stop burning their photos in the dustbin. Recently, he ran after some passersby who tried to look at the CDs in his "house" constructed with old cartons, baskets, empty crates and computer parts.
