UB To Get ICT Exchange Programmes Soon

Masters and PhD students as well as lecturers of the University of Buea, UB, have been promised exchange programmes with western universities.

The revelation about the exchange programmes deal was made public by Prof. Victor Mbarika, Director of the International Center for Information Technology and Development, ICITD, Southern University, USA, in Yaounde, December 19. The conference was placed under the theme: "Sustaining Africa's socio-economic renaissance."

Speaking at the start of the Information and Communication Technology, ICT, conference that took place in Yaounde, Prof. Mbarika said UB's Prof. Enoh Tanjong is at the forefront of the deal.

Mbarika, an ICT consultant and chair of the conference, said the exchange programme and collaboration would enable UB students and lecturers to tap from the ICT wealth of knowledge of western universities which would enable them to produce and transmit knowledge, and develop the country.

He noted that the purpose of the conference was to bring together minds to think intellectually about technological transformations. He said gone are the days that Africa must continue to borrow from western technology, and advised research students at the conference, dominantly from UB, to bring up research proposals that address local realities.

Mbarika said western governments are now realising that Africa has important contributions to make to the development of ICTs. He maintained that he is working with a team of first generation ICT PhD holders on how ICTs can penetrate Africa and how it can impact on the lives of rural dwellers in the continent.

Prof. Muhammadou Kah, Dean of ICT at the American University of Nigeria, acknowledged the brain drain phenomenon affecting African nations. However, he insisted that Africans in the Diaspora are ready to share what they have acquired in the west. "We have been brain drained but we are ready to brain circulate," he noted.

The Vice Chancellor of UB, Prof. Vincent Titanji, said Africa would never boast of economic independence "unless it starts producing and placing its [own] technological products in the market." He nevertheless expressed optimism when he said messages from his students indicate that such a venture is feasible.

The Deputy Chief of Missions at the US Embassy in Yaounde, Stephen Fox, said Cameroon is a promising destination for every industry or company dealing in ICTs. He said the two leading telephony companies, Orange and MTN, are grappling with an already saturated communication network because of the increasing demand.

He observed that business is however being stifled in the country by corruption. He also described as horrible efforts to set up a business in Cameroon, considering the numerous administrative bottlenecks. Thus, he urged conference organisers to think of how ICTs can be used in fighting against corruption.

Representing the Minister of Post and Telecommunications, the Secretary General, Edouard Ebah Abada, said the conference was taking place at a time when government has engaged in the promotion and development of ICT infrastructure in the country. He said ICTs are being introduced at all levels of Cameroon's educational system, while the internet is being domesticated.

Some of the themes treated at the conference included: ICT and business; ICT in education; ICT in healthcare; ICT and public sector, ICT, internet and society, etc.

This was a great initiative by Prof Mbarika and co. However, i still believe that what the Cameroonian government and its people need to consider most is to design effective strategies that could dramatically reduce the high level of corruption going on in the country. Basic social science teaches us that Financial development precedes economic development and that economic development can influence drastic changes in an economy. Nonetheless, in a system of corruption, no meaningful financial development is expected to take place. This is because there would always be that lack of trust in the regulatory and social framework in place. There are lots of Cameroonian professionals abroad managing multi-million pounds personal wealth who are ready to go home and contribute, however, they are being stifled by the current regimes mundane governance practices in place. We can only fundamentally change our country if we recognise and realise that our basic underlying need now is to fight corruption and give way for meritocracy to overide mediocrity.

Look at the first badge of medical school enrollment and tell me what you see.
If you are so satisfied with having two prime ministers, why the bloody hell were your parliamentarians crying wolf last week that the port of Limbe was being by-passed for that of Kribi? Isn't honey flowing through the fingers of Inoni getting to all quarters of the South West to have your mouth shut?
I have always suspected you guys to think with your stomachs, now, the proof is out in the open. And for your information, the North West is not short of food. Would an exchange programme in Cameroonian universities avail any economic upheaval?. Is it is strategic device, or could other initiatives be set prior to its implimentation, in a bid to curb its undisirable consequences?.

I personally think, it is a utopic initiative; concieved and imagined by some who fail to understand the "post first/masters degree socio-economic realities" of Cameroon. If an exchange student finds some courage to come back home, in the aftermath of his/her course, he/she would have firmly established a good precedence to make for a greener land after his programme in Cameroon.

USAMinnesota's behavior is not unlike that of a Camerounese agent who styled himself "Mukete" ,who used to troll websites frequented by Southern Cameroonians from various locations in the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The main mission of "Mukete" was to post language that fomented hatred between Southern Cameroonian civic and ethnic groups as a classical divide and rule tactic. That appears to be the case with USAMinnesota. He was similarly compulsive, posting day and night, suggesting that he either had a manic personality disorder or was being payed by the hour to post poison in prodigious quantities to pollute the psyches of our people.

There is one difference between Mukete and USAMinnesota, and it is one of style. Mukete wrote pages and pages of illogical rubbish. USAMinnesota is somewhat more succint and coherent. But, there were some curious convergences between USAMinnesota and Riccardo (another defunct troll), suggesting a team at work. There are elements from the Western Province of la Republique who believe that a free Southern Cameroons is the worst thing on earth for them and are the most opposed to our freedom. They would be well advised to back off from that position and maintain a positive relationship with our struggle.

Southern Cameroonians involved in the fight for the freedom of their country do not see themselves as SCNC's, SCAPO's, SCYL, etc but as foot soldiers fighting for the liberation of their country. There is nothing close to the hatred that exists between Bamis and Betis for example or between Igbos and Hausas and Yorubas amongst our neighbors. Marriage, friendships and relationships across ethnic lines is the norm and does not cause the kind of anguish that we see with our neighbors. There are more tribal disputes in La Republique du Cameroun and what you describe as our NW/SW divide is your own invention. Beti's dread the Bamilikies and they always seek refuge in the Southern Cameroons. Why we always treat them as our brothers and sisters, this is not the case in La Republique du Cameroun. In our major cities, Bamenda, Tiko, Limbe, Kumbo, etc, there is no difference between people pf Bamilikie origins and ordinary Southern Cameroonians. Happy New Year my dear compatriots,

It has been a long time since I was last at this forum after close to two years of futile engagement that failed to stir or generate an exchange of ideas on how to wrestle our potentially great country from the hands of people with the evil disposition.

I Google-searched my name today and was bemused by a Don-Quixote version of Sherlock Holmes investigation into my person.

"Hmm," I said to myself, "Whatever distorted image Mr. or Mrs. OnlineAdminsecure wants to portray of me; his soul, a part of him that he cannot not fool; got a better insight of me in the course of his "investigations.'"

A style of writing involves the choice of words, ways of putting words together-phrasing, flow of ideas, grasps of events-history etc. But I see our amateur investigators failed to put that into play. I rose above my fears of the evil system in power a long time ago when some of those who hate what I stand for were still in primary school, so I do not need to hide my identity when writing against anything or anybody.

My dear compatriots, we are in an age when the inflexible and radical ideologies of the left and the right have been discredited, when mankind's advancement can be guaranteed only in liberal societies that are democratic and protect the civil rights of its citizens. These societies should be against what is wrong and protect what is right. Yes my dear compatriots, we should strive for a humanist nation that can find a place in the 21st century.

We have to learn to be critical and self critical and to judge people's mind, ideas and actions, and not base our judgments on their ancestral origins, ethnicity, race, religion, region or country. It is unfortunate that the majority of detractors here have not made the psychosocial advancement into political humanists that would have to build the new Kamerun and make it a member of the community of progressive nations.

I will leave now to focus on the writing of a new book, "THE WORLD TO BE." We might get a better picture of what our destiny should look like if we consider our nation as a block that has to fit in a big jigsaw puzzle that is the world.
