Bill Gates Donates US $ I00 Million To Fight Polio

The world richest business magnet Bill Gates has chipped in some 100 million dollars to Rotary Club International Worldwide to eradicate polio that cripples children.

This was the content of the speech of the new Northwest Regional President of Rotary Club, Patrick Nwankwo, delivered at a recent Rotary Night organised at Ayaba Hotel that brought Rotarians from Cameroon, America and Uganda.

The Rotary President said his organisation has as one of its goals to eradicate polio in the world by the year 2015, thanks to the largess of Bill Gates. "We equally build peace and goodwill, provide humanitarian services and encourage high ethical standards in all vocations," Nwankwo said.

Nwankwo said every year Rotary spends millions of dollars in the domains of health, education and water to needy communities worldwide.

He stated that the Rotary Club in Bamenda in collaboration with USA Rotary clubs have supplied medical equipment to Kitiwum Health Centre in Bui Division co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Maple Valley USA, Laboratory equipment to Shisong Midwifery  and Laboratory School; assisted children suffering from diabetes; sponsored Wum Water Project; equipped the Shisong Cardiac Centre which is the best in West and Central Africa, and the Sacred Heart College water project to commence soon, co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ventura South California, USA.

With the support of all, Nwankwo said they will build public toilets, shelters along some major roads and Zebra Crossings on the major streets in Bamenda.Earlier, before handing over the relay baton to the new Regional President, the out gone President, Mathias Ofong, described his successor as a hardware Rotarian and seasoned administrator and called on all Rotarians to give Nwankwo the same support they gave him so that he succeeds in this humanitarian task.

Highlights of the occasion saw the induction of two new Rotarians; Barrister Nana and Rev. Fr. Kilian.Founded in 1905 by Paul Harris, there are 30,000 Rotary Clubs in 166 countries in the world.
