The Bamenda University of Science and Technology, BUST, has advocated self-reliance in order to fight poverty and unemployment.
BUST Vice Chancellor, Professor Moses Asanji, made this pronouncement during the institution's convocation ceremony on February 21. He condemned what he termed technological imperialism, which according to him, imprisons the minds of Cameroonians.
He regretted that in spite of Cameroon's natural and human richness, the country continues to receive products from the West without manufacturing. This situation, he said, can only be reversed through the provision of functional education and a thoughtful and pro-active development policy at the national and regional levels.
He boasted that the educational system BUST had embarked on, if encouraged, could pull Cameroon out of unemployment and poverty, while enhancing the cultural diversity of the country.
"The University's attractive programmes take cognisance of the local economy, characterised by individual peasant ventures and common initiative groups with a few corporate enterprises which strive at stimulating self actualization," Professor Asanji emphasised.
He said he is confident that BUST could achieve this goal because the institution had the infrastructure and right staffing and is affiliated to renowned schools like the University of Buea, Universities of Wales and Osnabrueck in Germany.
According to him, what the university wants from government is the authorisation to expand. He expressed gratitude to Higher Education Minister, Prof. Jacques fame Ndongo, Northwest Governor, Abakar Ahamat, Simon Achidi Achu and UB Vice Chancellor, Professor Vincent Titanji, for their collaboration.
