Michel Minyem, 34, has been dragged to the Ndokoti Magistrate Court for torturing his 27-year-old wife, whose name, The Post did not readily get.
His case file was forwarded to the court by the Logbaba Gendarmerie Brigade on February 27. It is said that the man had become notorious for committing adultery as well as turning his wife into a punching bag. The Post learnt that on February 24, Minyem probably forgot his bag in the parlour while he was inside the bedroom. His little son reportedly began to play with the bag when some items in the bag fell to the floor.
The wife, who moved in to pick up the fallen items, discovered that one of the items was a receipt for some beauty products, which the husband had probably bought for another woman. When the woman confronted her husband with the receipt, he quietly connected a pressing iron to electricity and left it for sometime to get hot.
The wife, who probably thought the husband wanted to iron his dress and leave the house to meet one of his concubines, continued to run her mouth. Before she realised what was happening, the husband had knocked her to the floor and transformed her into a dress. The man, according to witnesses, started by 'ironing` the woman's buttocks, then moved to the laps and down to her feet.
Following a distress cry from the woman, neighbours and passer-bys forced their way into the house to rescue the lady. The woman was rushed to the Logbaba District Hospital. Informed of the cruel incident, elements of the Logbaba Gendarmerie Brigade picked up Minyem. Meanwhile, some neighbours disclosed that before the incident, the woman was planning to file a complaint against the husband for adultery and torture.
35 Street Children Detained At New Bell Prison
Some 35 street children were February 23, transferred to the New Bell Prison on the instruction of the Wouri SDO, Bernard Okalia Bilai. The boys were rounded up during a swoop on them at their regular hideouts on February 19 by elements of the First Police District. Some were picked up while sleeping at the large cemetery opposite the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral at Bonadibong, while others were picked up in and around the Akwa Stadium.
The juveniles are being accused of contributing to the high rate of insecurity in the town. They are said to be notorious for crimes like banditry and rape. Wouri SDO said the arrest is part of the fight the administration is waging against insecurity in Douala.
Meanwhile, when the 35 street children were rounded up in the night of February 19, they were taken to the First Police District at Bonanjo, where they were dumped into the cell. It was said that they were to be taken to the State Counsel on February 23. But on February 22, they mounted a protest inside the cell, complaining about poor detention conditions.
The administration reacted by ordering for an administrative detention. So, on February 23, the boys were taken to the New Bell Prison for detention.
SDO Wages War Against Reckless Prostitution
Wouri SDO, Bernard Okalia Bilai, has taken his war against reckless prostitution to a new dimension. In the night of February 20, the SDO ordered that squads of police men be sent out to round up prostitutes who traditionally hangout at street sides, especially at the administrative quarter, Bonanjo. Some 46 prostitutes were picked up and detained at Central Police Station No.1 at Bonanjo.
On February 24, the SDO invited the prostitutes' relations and organised a ceremony at the police station to release them. The family members had to sign an undertaking to ensure that the girls do not return to street. It was also stated on the document that any of the girls arrested again in the street again will be prosecuted.
The SDO told the press that, prostitutes should carry out their activities, at least, with some sense of human dignity and at the appropriate venues. The SDO fumed that, at Bonanjo, prostitutes' hangout at street sides and even in front of the residences of some personalities. He noted that children in these homes are exposed to all sorts of obscenities.
the decission is the best to my personal point of view.
