Novelist, poet and painter Mbella Sonne Dipoko died this weekend in Tiko. Dipoko, one of the leading first generation Anglophone writers, was the author of the critically acclaimed A few nights and days, Because of Women, and Black and White in Love (published under the famous African Writers' Series).
"So let them be scared of my look, of my beard, of my head of hair. They are just philistines who are afraid of originality. They wish to be caricatures of Europeans. When they are scared of a mere beard, what would these people do when war comes, when the horizon suddenly begins to sneeze smoke and spit flames? Who will save the nation? For only the courageous can defend the colors of a country." Mbella Sonne Dipoko, May 1990
The head of man is a Holy Castle, and hair on the head of man is a source of spiritual strength, as it is a sign of dedication to the Ever Living Creator.
Some people carry dreadlocks, and wear long beards, but they're miles away from Rasta. They're like night to day. They talk about Lion, Iron, but they're far from Zion. These people WILL never see Jah.
Sing songs of praises to the Most High Ras Tafari. Write poems that glorify the Master up above. There's no use in writing poems that glorify carnal desires, and the debilitating bliss of a lecherous life with women.
All in all, old papa Dipoko was a maverick. Whether he failed in his mission on earth or not is immaterial. He has lived his own short and troubled life, and has left his own indelible imprint. As he now rests in Jah Mighty Hands, he's probably wondering if life on earth was worth the struggle and trouble...definitely YES!
RESPECT!
