Cameroon; 1966-2011: From a Totalitarian to a Competitive (Advanced) Authoritarian Regime Masked as a “Democracy”

In this paper, I argue using empirical evidence from history, the current situation in Cameroon and also relating studies that have been done on political reforms in Cameroon to posit that, unlike what the Cameroon government asserts itself as an advanced democracy, (the words of president Paul Biya),
it is rather more of a competitive form of authoritarianism or advanced authoritarianism. It is just short of a totalitarian or full scale authoritarian regime. However, the persistence of the competitive or advance authoritarian regime in Cameroon has been equally supported and sustained by a rather also lacklustre and equally advanced authoritarian and competitive authoritarian opposition.

Authoritarian rule clothed in a veneer of democracy is best captured by Francis Nyamnjoh's book, "Married But Available" a research-based study around BU where married persons cavort and pass around in prostitution in the same manner as the regime proclaims democracy but ostensibly practices dictatorship. Can you beat that?
